An intelligent satelite image information system for monitoring oceanic and coastal parameters

Abstract

An Intelligent Satellite Image Information System (ISIS) will be established at the German Remote Sensing Data Center of DLR. ISIS will help to support ecological and global investigations using spaceborne techniques by establishing a data and information capability. Through communication networks ISIS offers services to Earth sciences such as geodynamics, land processes, oceanic processes, and atmospheric dynamics and chemistry.

There are three discipline areas of ocanography — physical oceanography, biological productivity, and polar oceans for which the development, evaluation, and application of advanced spaceborne remote sensing techniques are of great importance. In concrete terms, by means of a single case study concerning sea-ice motions in the Greenland Sea, the importance and validity of AVHRR data are documented.
