Abstract

The source of the “long” version of the “novella” XVIII of the Novellino (entitled: “Della vendetta che fece Iddio d'uno barone di Carlo Magno”) has always been considered to be Chapter VII of the Latin version of the Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle. However, a comparison between this “novella” and the so-called Old French Johannes translation of the Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle, shows that the source of the Italian “novella” should rather be the Old French Johannes translation or one of the Old French versions linked to it.

This relationship also proves that the Johannes translation must have been well-known in Italy too.
