Abstract
The magnetite skarns of Ginevro are isolated in a country rock composed largely of strongly deformed quartzo-pelitic hornfels. They do not contain the normal accessories of magnetite (iron-rich garnets and pyroxenes) but almost uniquely sodic iron rich hornblendes. The mineralized bodies do not have any structure visibly inherited from sedimentation; their lateral gradation into carbonate rocks or ferruginous sediments is no longer observable. The proposed structural model is based principally on the geometry of the mixedbanded hornfels which enclose the mineralized bodies. Evidence is presented for the large scale concordance of the bodies with the country rocks. The paragenetic sequence and problems related to the mineralizing environment are examinated with respect to experimental data. The unusual sodic character of the principal silicate minerals is attributed to the contamination of mineralizing solutions by salt water. Stratigraphic correlations show that the mineralized bodies could have resulted by a total metasomatism of carbonate lenses. In conclusion, the Ginevro deposit is defined by four “métallotectes” (metallogenetic controls).
