Abstract

This investigation includes a redescription of the holotype of Angularella minutiuncinata (Burt, 1938), a redescription of the type-species of Vitta, V. magniuncinata Burt, 1938, based on specimens (including types) from Sri Lanka and Borneo, and a description of specimens determined as V. riparia (Dubinina, 1953) from Sudan. These three species are recognized as valid and their taxonomy is briefly discussed. The systematic position of dilepidid cestodes parasitizing swallows is analysed. The genus Angularella (with species A. beema, A. urbica, A. ripariae, A. hirundina sensu Spasskaja & Spassky (1971), A. minutiuncinata and A. audubonensis) is considered a monophyletic group. A. parachelidonariae and A. chelidonariae are temporarily retained in the same genus. An amended diagnosis of Vitta is proposed. This genus includes V. magniuncinata, V. rustica sensu Spassky & Spasskaja (1959), V. riparia, V. taiwanensis and V. singhi: these species are considered to form a natural group. V. ovolaciniata, V. parvirostris and V. undulatoides from swallows, in addition to V. crotophagae from Cuculiformes and V. swifti from Apodiformes, are regarded as species incertae sedis.
