Abstract
The seed bank of a young (12 year-old) wetland complex on a southern Illinois surface coal mine was studied for two years in order to ascertain functional characteristics. Five wetlands were encompassed in this wetland complex and varied in type from marsh to an ephemeral, upland, weedy area. Seed bank samples, germinated under submersed and drawdown conditions, indicated total seedling densities to range between 31–186 m−2. Though seedling densities were low, species diversity (H') and evenness (J) were relatively high. Low densities are attributed to the age of the wetlands and to their location on a disturbed (surface mine) habitat.
