Abstract

Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) is a histologic entity that affects mainly the colon and is frequently associated with aganglionosis. Most publications related to IND have appeared in European journals. Descriptions of this entity have been unclear; both symptoms as well as treatments have been multiple, and results poorly described, which has provoked skepticism among many clinicians. An exhaustive literature review was conducted with the purpose of finding consistencies and inconsistencies that could affirm or deny the existence of this entity. Twenty-five publications qualified for this study, including 322 patients. No correlation was found between histologic findings and symptoms. The therapeutic efforts included medical treatment as well as “sphincter operations” and bowel resection. No correlation was found among the histologic abnormalities, symptoms, extent of the disease, and treatment employed. Results and follow-up were described in very few cases, and therefore, no conclusions can be drawn. Innervation disorders of the bowel deserve further investigation, but at present, this entity must be considered purely of investigative interest; clinical implications must wait for more strict and systematized descriptions.
