Abstract
Mucormycosis (zygomycosis, phycomycosis) is the most acutely fatal fungal infection in humans. It is a rare condition and any one person's experience with the condition is limited to a few cases at most. A patient with advanced rhino-orbitocerebral mucormycosis who survived after debridement and free flap transfer is presented. It is proposed that a free flap may provide the ideal environment for combatting this condition by providing an increased blood supply and an effective delivery system for antimicrobial agents.
