III: Empirical NLTE analysis of FeI lines

Abstract

We analyse Fe i lines observed during the 1961 eclipse at Brač, Yugoslavia (see paper II: van Dessel et al., 1973), using a computer program for the calculation of theoretical line intensities, which was described in Paper I (van Dessel, 1970). A few minor modifications to the physical input are discussed in Section 2. NLTE-coefficients, affecting the line absorption coefficient and the source function, are introduced and discussed in Section 3. Starting from coefficients derived from the combination T el (HSRA) + Tex (Holweger), suitable distributions with height of the NLTE-coefficients are determined for the most striking cases among the observed lines. Only little deviation from the populations derived from Holweger's temperature distribution is needed to explain the observed line behaviour.
