Abstract

Strong line wings and the V-reversal in umbral countours of Fe i 6302.5 Å and similar lines have been explained earlier by inhomogeneous magnetic models. It is shown that both effects may also be explained assuming a homogeneous magnetic field and homogeneous umbral model atmospheres.

A discussion of the difficulties arising in LTE calculations of Fe i 5250. 2Å-contours by means of umbral models recently derived suggests that the high layers of these models are strongly influenced by non-LTE, a temperature minimum occurring perhaps at larger depths than in the undisturbed photosphere.
