Summary
The first part of this study is consecrated to the geographical distribution of Spiraea tomentosa L. (including var. rosea) in North America. The range of the species extends from Quebec to Georgia, and from Nova Scotia to Minnesota.
In the second part, which deals with the autecology of the species, such factors as light and soil (texture, pH, water content) are emphasized.
The third part is a phytosociological study of the hardhack association in the vicinity of Granby (Shefford Co.), Province of Quebec: A description is given of the regional distribution and structure of the association: three biotopes are recognized as different by the floristic composition of their vegetation, their humidity, and their pH. The association is composed of three layers: a moss, a herb and a shrub layer. Its composition is analyzed: 192 species were found in 20 quadrats (100 m2 each). Its biological spectrum is given. Abundance, frequency, constancy and fidelity are studied.
Attention is paid to the dynamism of the association; the chief associations of the succession in the area are given.
