An international experiment on juvenility in apple

Summary

Young apple seedlings of James Grieve (open pollinated) were grown at 6 locations from Finland to Italy, to investigate where the juvenile period would be shortest. The plants flowered first in Italy and last in Finland, the other countries giving intermediate times. It is clear that fruit breeders in southern countries have an advantage over their colleagues in more northern locations.
