Summary
-
1.
Two sisters, aged 56 and 51 years respectively, showing essential shrinking of the conjunctiva were observed. In addition to the ocular lesion both showed an extensive deformity of the hands, and a generalised skin disturbance. In the less severely affected sister vesicle formation on the cornea could be seen. The more heavily affected sister showed the terminal stage of shrinking of the conjunctiva. The history of the skin condition suggested a diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa with unusual features. Histologically the skin showed universal atrophy of the epidermis and cutis, with cyst formation indicative of epidermolysis bullosa.

2.
The patiens were the offspring of a consanguineous marriage. The skin trouble dated from the age of 18 months in one patient and to the age of six years in the other. In both the eye trouble appears to have developed at the age of fourteen. The deformity of the hands and the conjunctival lesion had developed progressively and slowly.

1.
