Abstract
The place of post-graduate studies in the educational system is discussed with special reference to the need to produce highly trained high quality personnel capable of making a unique contribution to the development of a country's resources. In Latin America the training of post-graduates is almost always done in universities. The planning of a coherent system of post-graduate studies is therefore of great importance. Such plans must take into account national, regional and instititutional aspects of the problem. The legitimate aspirations of particular institutions must be respected but minimum conditions must be established and above all the efforts of individual institutions must be seen as part of a wider plan which seeks to match national and regional needs with the most productive use of scarce resources both human and financial. The post-graduate system in Argentina is described and some suggestions are made for its future development.
