Summary

Metal chelates of secondary cellulose acetate (SCA) with chromium(III), copper(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II) and UO 2+2 were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments and spectral studies. SCA acts as a uninegatively charged bidentate ligand and reacts with the metal ion via the oxygen atom of the secondary unacetylated hydroxyl group in the glucose subunit of the polymer, plus the oxygen atom of the vicinal ester group, to form a five-membered chelate ring.
