High-frequency temperature fluctuations in the atmospheric boundary layer

Abstract

Vertical profiles, up to 914 m, of simultaneous measurements of the rate of dissipation of temperature variance (N) and turbulent kinetic energy (ɛ), in certain broad classifications are presented. The statistical distribution of the data, which appears to be closely log-normal is discussed. The profiles presented here are compared with those of other workers in the field and it is seen that a broad description of typical vertical profiles of N can now be added to that of ɛ. An attempt is made to estimate the stability and heat flux in the various classes by applying simplified energy-balance equations re-written in surface-stress layer form to the observations at 37 m.
