Genetic aspect of capacity of colonization of cheilanthes tenuifolia (Burm.) SW. (Pteridophyta, polypodiaceae)

Four disjunct populations of C. tenuifolia (n=56) were tested for their reproductive biology with the help of isolate pair and cross cultures. It was observed that this potentially self-fertilizing homosporous fern has abandoned self-fertilization in favour of out-breeding which constitutes the only means of its reproduction. This system is the consequence of the appearance of a heavy genetic load which limits the taxon's colonizing power and thereby severely restricts its distribution in areas of its occurrence.
