Abstract
Conditional sampling methods are used to investigate the structure of thermals in a dry atmospheric convection layer. Temperature and vertical velocity data obtained from an aircraft flying above the surface layer are analysed. The thermal structure is found to be consistent with free-convection similarity theory.
