The local atmospheric circulation in the Rome area: Surface observations

Abstract

A series of meteorological observations was made in the Rome area in June 1975, to investigate the local atmospheric circulation.

After a brief description of the field observations and the analysis of the synoptic scale flow, all the meteorological field data are examined.

It is found that the local circulation, mainly due to the thermal difference between land and sea (\:_15 °C), was of the sea-breeze type. The breeze penetrated inland more than 50 km, and its depth near the coast was more than 2000 m. Another important feature was represented by the presence of the city of Rome: in fact, the temperature difference between urban and rural areas reached almost the same amount, i.e., 15 °C. Finally, the effect of orography on the wind direction was noticeable, which turned out to be a deflection of the wind itself.
