An experiment on the Bernoulli thinning effect in unsaturated superfluid films

  • Published:
Journal of Low Temperature Physics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Measurements of the third-sound velocity on moving unsaturated superfluid films are presented in the range of 1.5–1.8 K. The results show that the average of the two Doppler-shifted velocities does not change with the film flow velocity. Since the third-sound velocity is highly thickness dependent, these results suggest that no thinning occurs in the moving film. An alternate possible interpretation is that the superfluid density may be velocity dependent. If this is the case, then this experiment presents measurements of this dependence.
