Summary

Three of the five nominal species of Ransomnema are redescribed. Ransomnema longispiculum Artigas, 1926 from Rhinocricus padbergi from São Paulo, Brazil is distinguished from all other species in the genus by its extremely long right spicule. Ransomnema christiei Dollfus, 1952 from Rhinocricus cachoeirensis from São Paulo is distinguished from the preceding species by spicule length and disposition of caudal papillae in the male and by vulvar and caudal morphology in the female. Ransomnema communis Travassos & Kloss, 1965 redescribed from paratype material from Rhinocricus electrofasciatus from Pará, Brazil is most similar to Ransomnema christiei but is distinguished from this species by its longer right spicule. Dudekemnema Skrjabin, Schikhabalova & Lagodovskaya, 1966 is considered a synonym of Ransomnema. It is suggested that the type species of Dudekemnema, R. macrocephalus (d'Udekem, 1859) is a South American species and not, as suggested by previous authors, a European one.
