Summary
The primary production was measured from May 1966 through April 1967, in the Thompson Lake, Southern Illinois. 14C, pH and O2 methods were used to study the entire community under natural conditions. During diurnal hours CO2 absorption occurred at a faster rate than O2 evolution. In late summer the CO2 uptake reached a maximum of 60 µmoles/l/hr, and O2 production reached a maximum of 36.3 µmoles/l/hr.
An investigation of inorganic phosphate absorption was made with labelled Na2P32O4. The percentage rate of 32P absorption was widely scattered within a range of 0.04%–0.30%/min during the period of October to April. The average phosphate uptake in winter and in spring was 60 µg/l/hr.
There is no indication of any direct relation between inorganic phosphate absorption rates and photosynthetic rates. A better correlation between temperature and inorganic phosphate absorption was observed. This shows that in the natural environment, temperature influences phosphate absorption more than other factors.
