Abstract

The foundation of Euphytica was sponsored by institutions and breeding establishments interested in greater efficiency in publishing the results of plant breeding research in the Netherlands. The journal received a foundation capital while the editing and administration work was undertaken by the Institute of Agricultural Plant Breeding at Wageningen.

The first 9 volumes (1952–1960) comprise 2,591 pages and 109 plates. In these volumes 305 articles were published, 244 of which were written by Dutch research workers and plant breeders.

The number of subscribers increased from 480 in 1952 to 997 in 1960. In addition more than 100 back numbers are sold annually.

Thanks to the credit balances gained through the first 4 volumes (on average 246 pages) it was possible to overtake largely the running-shortage of the following 5 volumes which covered more pages (on average 321 pages).

The balance between the revenues from subscription and the cost of printing, etc. lies at volumes of approx. 280 pages. It follows that it will remain possible to publish more pages at the same subscription rate if the number of subscriptions increases or subsidies are granted.
