Abstract
Interspecific hybridization was achieved between cowpea (Vigna unquiculata [L.] Walp) and a hairy wild relative (V. pubescens). Hybrid embryos which otherwise would have shrivelled and failed to germinate were excised prematurely and cultured on a solidified MS medium. The F1 plants were vigorous in growth, partially sterile, slightly hairy and showed some intermediate features between the two parental types. Cytological investigations on F1 pollen mother cells showed average chromosome associations per cell of 0.66I+10.00II+0.34IV.
