Abstract

The present paper deals with the ecological behaviour of green algae (Volvocales, Chlorococcales and desmids) of certain freshwater ponds, studied over a period of two years. The distributional patterns and periodicity of the various forms were compared with the changes in chemical constituents of water. The following conclusions were drawn.

  1. i.

Volvocales preferred eutrophic waters having high salt content. Their periodicity was possibly dependent upon the concentrations of nitrates and phosphates.

  2. ii.

Chlorococcales were present in both, the calcium-rich and Calcium-poor ponds but the species composition was totally different from each other.

  3. iii.

The ecology of desmids was possibly linked with the iron content and Divalent Monovalent ratio of water.
