Abstract
Some effects of methyl jasmonate (Me-Ja) on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seed germination and seedling development are described and compared with those of ABA. Both growth regulators have very similar action. They inhibit germination, but high concentrations of O2 in the atmosphere suppress this inhibitory action. Depending on the concentration, Me-Ja inhibits root and hypcotyl growth, however the root is more sensitive to Me-Ja than to ABA. Me-Ja also strongly reduces oxygen uptake during germination and inhibits chlorophyll biosynthesis in isolated cotyledons.
