Summary

Using ‘Chinese Spring’ monosomics an analysis was made to locate the genes controlling kernel colour, kernel groove shape, and the shape of the upper margin of the glume in the spring wheat ‘Zlatka’. Two genes controlling kernel colour, R1 and R3, which had been described in a number of varieties, were found on chromosomes 3D and 3B of ‘Zlatka’, respectively.

In ‘Zlatka’ sharp margin of kernel groove was dominant over rounded margin. The dominant genes were located on chromosomes 3A and 5A.

‘Chinese Spring’ has a sloping upper glume margin, which was found to be dominant over horizontal glume margin in ‘Zlatka’. This character is governed by three complementary genes. Recessive alleles of the genes, described as g1, g2, g3, were located on chromosomes 5A, 5B and 5D respectively.
