A strategy for the improvement of protein quality in pulses by breeding

Summary

A breeding strategy for the improvement of protein quality in pulses is suggested in which the occurrence of polymorphic proteins and presence or absence of specific proteins can be exploited. This presupposes separation and characterisation of pure protein fractions for amino acid content. Genetic control of protein polymorphism is frequently simple and should be amenable to selection. The environmental influence on relative amounts of various protein fractions produced is considerable and requires further study. Production of maximum amounts of optimal quality seed protein would require effective manipulation of genotype and environmental conditions.
