The possibilities of early selection for forcing ability and productivity in tulips

Summary

The long breeding cycle and the slow vegetative reproduction of tulips (Tulipa sspp.) seriously restrict the activities of private breeders. The research programme of the Institute is aimed at the development of methods of early selection on such characteristics as productivity, forcing ability and disease susceptibility, which would enable breeders to work more efficiently.

Observations in seedling populations and comparisons between very small bulblets of commercial clones and mature, flowering bulbs of the same clones led to some provisional criteria for selection.

Time of germination was found to be maternally determined and as such unsuitable for selection purposes. On the other hand sprout development appeared to be a useful criterion for selection on forcing ability while the degree and mode of reproduction of the bulblets showed some promise as a criterion for productivity. These criteria are being tested in a few large seedling populations.

Samenvatting

Door de lange jeugdperiode en de relatief langzame vegetatieve vermeerdering worden de activiteiten van de praktische kwekers sterk beperkt. Op het I.V.T. is het onderzoekprogramma gericht op het ontwikkelen van methoden van vroege voor-selectie op eigenschappen als geschiktheid voor forcering, produktiviteit en gevoeligheid voor ziekten, om aldus de kwekers in staat te stellen effectiever te kunnen werken.

Waarnemingen in zaailingpopulaties en vergelijkingen van het gedrag van kleine bolletjes van handelsrassen met dat van de grote bloeibare bollen van de overeenkomstige rassen leidden tot enkele voorlopige selectiecriteria.

Vastgesteld werd dat het kiemtijdstip van zaden alleen door de moederplant wordt bepaald en als zodanig ongeschikt is voor selectiedoeleinden. Spruitlengte-ontwikkeling daarentegen schijnt een waardevol criterium voor selectie op geschiktheid voor forcering te zijn. Aan aard en mate van verklistering van kleine bolletjes werd een veelbelovend criterium voor selectie op produktiviteit ontleend. Deze criteria worden getoetst in enkele grote zaailingpopulaties.
