Cyst formation of Tubifex tubifex (Müller) — an adaptation to survive food deficiency and drought

Abstract

Adult individuals of Tubifex tubifex (Müller) (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) could be induced to form cysts in the laboratory. Hiding in cysts, Tubifex tubifex survived a five-month drought period in the field. Encysted Tubifex tubifex had a lower super-cooling-point than mobile individuals. Food shortage is believed to be the main factor in cyst formation.
