Abstract
Adult individuals of Tubifex tubifex (Müller) (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) could be induced to form cysts in the laboratory. Hiding in cysts, Tubifex tubifex survived a five-month drought period in the field. Encysted Tubifex tubifex had a lower super-cooling-point than mobile individuals. Food shortage is believed to be the main factor in cyst formation.
