Abstract
Methods which have been used to study creep induced embrittlement are reviewed and a new method based on the use of fracture mechanics concepts is proposed. It is suggested that fracture toughness, as measured by J IC, be used to follow the embrittlement process. Exploratory tests are conducted on a Cr−Mn steel and the results are presented to illustrate the procedure.
The implications of a time dependent fracture toughness with regard to critical crack length are examined. The effect on a characterization of the conditions for a transition from stable creep crack growth to unstable crack extension is also discussed.
