Abstract

The crack opening displacement at the centre of a surface crack in a pressurized sphere has been calculated using a strip yielding model. The shallow shell solution for the stress intensity factor derived by Folias has been extended to derive the COD, and the resulting equations have been solved numerically by a procedure due to Erdogan. The results are of relevance to fracture predictions and gas leakage rate calculations.
