The growth of soybean (Glycine max) roots in relation to soil micromorphology

Summary

Greenhouse studies were conducted in which the pore size and geometry of the growth media were varied systematically by varying ped size or the amount of sand, silt, or clay. This study showed that one can relate the micromorphological properties of soils to their physical properties and to root growth. This preliminary work also suggests that it is feasible to use this greenhouse technique to study the root penetration of natural soil layers under controlled greenhouse conditions.
