A discussion of the status of the subfamily Baccigerinae Yamaguti, 1958 (Digenea) and the constitution of the family Fellodistomidae Nicoll, 1909

Abstract

Contrary to recent reports it is suggested that the subfamily Baccigerinae belongs in the monophyletic family Fellodistomidae and is not closely related to the Lepocreadiidae. This conclusion is based on both morphological and life-history information. The Fellodistomidae contains seven subfamilies: Fellodistominae, Baccigerinae, Lintoniinae, Monascinae, Monodhelminthinae, Proctoecinae and Tergestiinae. Their relationships are discussed. In these groups, at least, the cercarial tail should only be usedas a phylogenetic indicator with great caution.
