Abstract
As regards the quality of mud different regions of Lake Skadar can be distinguished. In the vegetation zone fine sand predominates and the highest amounts of the organic matter are found. However, in mud of the central part of the lake total clay prevails, but the amount of organic matter is very small.
Detritus beneath the vegetation contains far more total nitrogen and organic matter, especially proteins and lipids than in the open part of the lake. The same applies to tannines, hemicellulose and cellulose, whereas the amounts of lignin are lower.
