Summary
Calcium transport in roots of maize and bean plants.
In order to study Ca-transport in roots of intact plants, nutrient solution labelled with Ca45 was supplied to a 3 cm long root zone of 9 days old maize (Zea mays L, Velox) and bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Saxa). The remainder of the root system (length of the seminal root 25–30 cm) grew in nutrient solution without Ca45. After 1–7 days the distribution of Ca45 was determined in the different root zones and in the shoot.
-
1.)
Ca45 was accumulated mainly in the root zone to which it was supplied. During the upward translocation only small amounts of Ca45 were taken up from the xylem by the surrounding root tissue. Most of the Ca45 was translocated into the leaves.
-
2.)
Neither in maize nor in bean Ca45 was translocated in direction to the root tip (i.e. in the phloem), even not after increase of the Ca-concentration to 10 me/l and prolongation of the experiments to 4 or 7 days. Transport towards the root tip could only be induced after removal of the root tip; in this case, however, the apical transport obviously took place in the xylem.
-
3.)
Per unit root length uptake of Ca45 in nodal roots was lower than in seminal roots due to the lower diameter of the nodal roots. Based on the dry weight, however, uptake was nearly the same. Also in nodal roots no phloem transport of Ca45 took place.
-
4.)
Into young laterals (up to a length of more than 1 cm) but not into old laterals (longer than 2 cm) Ca45 was translocated from the seminal root. Obviously at the beginning of their growth laterals act as a sink for mineral elements taken up in other root zones and only at a later stage the uptake rate for the external solution exceeds their own demand. The direction of the xylem stream then changes in the basal direction and they contribute to the mineral nutrition of the shoot.
-
5.)
Also under conditions of Ca deficiency in the tip zone of the root, i.e-when this zone grew in a Ca-free nutrient solution, it was not possible to induce translocation of Ca45 towards the root tip, despite the fact that high Ca concentrations (10 me/l) were supplied to basal zones. Under these conditions the root tip died within 2 days as the result of Ca deficiency. Therefore growing root tips must be permanently supplied with Ca directly from the external solution. This also explains why penetration of roots through soil layers low in available Ca is difficult or restricted.
