Summary
Clones of Lolium perenne were found to vary considerably in the rate at which they developed Leaf Water Deficit. The size of the shoot and root systems had independent influence upon this rate. In plants with same sized shoot system, the smaller the root system the slower the development of LWD. This was attributed to a greater resistance to water movement in the soil and roots than in the shoot. These findings are discussed in relation to the growth rate of the shoot and competition in the sward. re]19730507
