Bivesiculidae and Haplosplanchnidae (Digenea) from fishes of the southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Abstract

Bivesiculid and haplosplanchnid trematodes are recorded from southern Great Barrier Reef fishes. In the Bivesiculidae: Paucivitellosus fragilis Coil, Reid & Kuntz, 1965 is recorded from Mugil cephalus, M. georgii, Myxus elongatus, Crenimugil crenilabis, Liza vaigiensis, Istiblennius meleagris and I. edentulus; Paucivitellosus hanumanthai Mani, 1989 is considered a synonym of P. fragilis; Bivesicula unexpecta n. sp. is described from Acanthochromis polyacanthus (Pomacentridae); B. claviformis Yamaguti, 1934 (new synonyms B. epinepheli Yamaguti, 1938 and B. xishaense Gu & Shen, 1983) is recorded from Epinephelus quoyanus and E. fasciatus (Serranidae); and Bivesiculoides fusiformis n. sp. is described from Atherinomorus capricornensis (Atherinidae). In the Haplosplanchnidae: Schickhobalotrema pomacentri is recorded from Abudefduf whitleyi, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Amphiprion akindynos, A. perideraion, Parma polylepis, Pomacentrus chrysurus, P. philippinus, P. tripunctatus, Pomacentrus sp. and Stegastes apicalis; and Hymenocotta mulli Manter, 1961 is recorded from Crenimugil crenilabis, Mugil cephalus and Liza vaigiensis. Contrary to the original description, the latter species possesses a vesicular pars prostatica but lacks a cirrus-sac.
