Synopsis

Male orangethroat darters,Etheostoma spectabile, did not show a preference for larger females as measured by the number of matings or time until mating in a field enclosure experiment. The lack of male preference for female size may be due to the male-biased sex ratio at the site (seven males per female) or to low variation in the number of eggs deposited per spawning.
