Effect of oil aerosols on pre-ignition phenomena

The mechanism that leads to auto-ignition is yet to be completely explained. KIT and MANN+HUMMEL have come together to investigate this topic and the role that engine oil plays in it.

Starting point

In combustion engines, leaks can occur and flow via the piston ring group in the direction of the crankcase as a result of high pressure differences between the combustion chamber and the crankcase. This “blow-by flow” comprises residues from combustion, from the oil film on the cylinder liner and from the leak at the valve stem seals. On this basis, a very fine aerosol comprising liquid and solid particles is created. This blow-by aerosol is further saturated with oil particles in the area of the crank drive. Ventilating the crankcase counteracts a continuous rise in pressure with the inevitable failure of the sealing concept.
