New MTU High-Performance Diesel Engines without Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment for Tier 4

This article introduces the new MTU Series 1600 high-performance diesel engines, which have been designed especially for off-road applications, fulfilling the emission legislation US EPA/CARB Tier 4 without using any exhaust gas aftertreatment. While the release of the twelve-cylinder engine (up to 736 kW) has already been in January 2015, the ten-cylinder engine (up to 610 kW) will be released in the first quarter of 2016.

Challenges

The ten- and twelve-cylinder Series 1600 engines have been completely new developed at MTU for use in off-road application (such as construction and industrial (C&I) and agriculture) in order to close the gap between the MTU Series 2000 and the MTU lower power range engines in these applications. The lower power range engines are represented by the MTU Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500, and are based on the Daimler platforms MDEG (Medium Duty Engines) and HDEP (Heavy Duty Engines).
