Beyond the gait: a useful approach in assessing motor performance in old people

Dear Editor,

We have read with interest and pleasure the paper by Peixoto and collaborators about the evaluation of lower limbs symmetry in patients with knee osteoarthritis [1]. The authors enrolled 33 women aged > 65 years with bilateral knee osteoarthritis and equal number of asymptomatic controls. They evaluated the patients with clinical and radiological examinations and appropriate questionnaires. The subjects were assessed by using gait analysis (GA), performed throughout a pressure-sensor system, in order to assess the symmetry of spatio-temporal parameters of walking. Peixoto and colleagues found that patients presented a reduced gait speed but a symmetry of the parameters [1].

The paper is very important for clinical and research activity for several reasons. First, the authors completed the clinical assessment with quantitative measurements based on specific devices.
