The European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) has the privilege to proudly announce the publication of the updated EAPD policy document “Guidelines on the use of fluoride for caries prevention in children”.
EAPD has a long standing history for producing fluorides usage guidelines. The first guidelines were published in 2000 and then updated in 2009. Both were the result of consensus workshops that took place in Athens, Greece, with the participation of invited experts in the field from all over Europe. Ten years later the time came to develop the latest updated policy document that appears in the present issue of the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry.
Twenty invited experts from Scandinavia, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Turkey and Spain gathered again in Athens and took part in an intensive consensus workshop over a period of 2 days that resulted, following extensive discussions before, during and after the workshop, in the present updated guidelines. Again, four groups of experts were formed working on fluoride toothpastes, fluoride milk/salt/tablets, fluoride gels/rinses/varnishes and fluoridated water, while a fifth separate multicenter team worked on ‘fluoride and dental erosion’.
The EAPD wishes to sincerely thank the five working groups, moderators and all participants and the two workshop and report coordinators that all contributed to the present publication. All made a great effort and shared their valuable knowledge leading to the development of another significant EAPD policy document.
