GE’s J920 Gas Engine — 10.4 MW Power and more than 50 % Electrical Efficiency

This article discusses the technology used in the 24 bar BMEP version of GE’s Jenbacher J920 FleXtra gas engine. This advanced gas engine provides customers with an almost 10 % power increase and more than 50 % electrical efficiency (more than 51 % engine efficiency) combined with fast startup capabilities, an increased lifetime, and proven reliability to enable greater efficiency and power output. A newly developed combustion concept — enabeling TA Luft and IED 2012 compliant versions — helps the engine reach these ambitious targets. The J920 FleXtra gas engine uses an optimised two-stage turbocharging system with enhanced air handling and model-based predictive engine controls as well as thermomechanical optimisation.
