Determining Catalytic Fines Concentrations in Heavy Fuel Oils

Much of the heavy fuel oil used in large two-stroke marine diesel engines is contaminated at the refinery with hard particles which can cause catastrophic abrasive damage to cylinder liners. Hitherto laboratory and onboard methods to determine the level of these “cat fines” were relatively slow. Fuel analysis specialist Parker Kittiwake has devised a new test to give crews a rapid indication of fuel quality.

1 Motivation

Highly abrasive particles known as catalytic fines (“cat fines”) find their way into heavy fuel oils (HFO) at the oil refinery and can cause rapid wear to the cylinder liners of large marine two-stroke engines during the combustion process. The problem has recently been exacerbated, inadvertently, by regulations targeting reductions in emissions of oxides of sulphur (SOx) in engine exhausts. These have driven the use of low sulphur fuels which are prone to higher cat fines contents.
