Pre-chamber Pressure-based Management of Gas Engines

Gas engine control specialists IMES and PGES have cooperated to develop cylinder pressure sensors small enough to fit into gas engine pre-chambers and a controller which enables closed-loop control of the gas flow into the pre-chamber from cycle to cycle. By controlling emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, the new concept allows gas engines with pre-chambers to realise higher power density and efficiency, as well as enabling sophisticated monitoring of pre-chamber condition.
Gas engines with active pre-chambers have the greatest potential for increasing efficiency and power density. The main advantage of an active pre-chamber is that the air-fuel-ratio in the main chamber can be very lean. As a result the knocking limit is raised to higher mean effective pressures (MEPs) and engine efficiency can be increased.
