Correlating Simulation and Testing for Flexibly Coupled Generator Sets

Caterpillar and Classification Society DNV GL have cooperated to examine the torsional vibration response of diesel engines powering flexibly coupled two-bearing generators in diesel-electric propulsion systems. Aside from resolving a specific issue, the exercise highlighted potentially larger torsional loading on engines optimised for new NOx limits and resulted in a recommendation that gas force excitation values be updated to match current engine ratings.

1 Motivation

Caterpillar and Classification Society DNV GL have cooperated to better understand the torsional vibration response of Caterpillar diesel engines powering flexibly coupled two-bearing generators in a diesel-electric marine propulsion system where the generator is driven through a stub-shaft mounted coupling at the end away from the engine flywheel.
