With the advent of hybrid drive solutions, the role of the prime mover is changing dramatically and a range of benefits is being accessed for both end users and the environment. By further shifting torque conversion to the drive train or propulsion train, smaller engines can run closer to their best points for power, fuel consumption and — importantly — emissions. Inaugurating a new focus in MTZindustrial, gear specialist Renk, outlines the potentials of hybrid technology in marine propulsion.

Background

Over recent years, marine propulsion has changed more and more to electric hybrid or even all-electric propulsion. This evolution is driven by the need for increased efficiency, resulting from demands for extended vessel ranges, lower overall emission rates — encompassing both noxious emissions and greenhouse gases — as well as further measures to protect the environment.
