Ice Impact Simulation for Propulsion Machinery

Transport by sea is increasing in Arctic and Antarctic regions as climate change progresses. The latest ice class rules from the Classification Societies require torsional vibration simulation of ice block impacts on ship’s propeller blades. MAN Diesel & Turbo has developed software for simulating the effects of impacts on direct drive propulsion systems based on their low speed two-stroke engines. This article is based on a paper presented at the 2014 Torsional Vibration Symposium in Salzburg (Austria).

Testing propulsion systems for ice operation

During recent years, there has been increasing demand for ships built for operation in areas prone to ice, especially for the lower ice class notations.
