Hybrid Lightweight Cylinder Crankcase -Challenges and Feasibility

The fuel consumption and the CO2 output as well as the acceleration behavior of a vehicle are directly affected by its total mass. Showing the biggest lightweight potential the cylinder crankcase of the combustion engine is the obvious choice for weight optimizations. A light combustion engine is also important for hybrid vehicles since additional components like the electric motor, the power electronics and the battery increase the vehicle mass. In combination with the electric motor new functional requirements come up. The efficiency-optimized operation temperature has to be reached quickly and held as long as possible, even with the engine turned off. With the launch of electromobility the requirements regarding the acoustic behavior of the powertrain and thus of the cylinder crankcase become higher.
