The Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain for Compact Cars from Mercedes-Benz

The A-class is the sixth Mercedes-Benz model to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The overall concept combines everyday all-electric driving with high performance and the long-distance comfort of conventional drives. The vehicle offers an electric range of around 70 km along with a combined system output of 160 kW. This article classifies and describes the powertrain and addresses the hybrid-specific functions.

Positioning in the product portfolio

Mercedes-Benz offers plug-in hybrid powertrains in the C, E and S-class as well as in the SUVs GLC and GLE. At the core of their modular hybrid system is a traction head arranged between the internal combustion engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission (9G-Tronic). The hybrid traction head incorporates a torque converter, a separating clutch and a powerful electric motor in a compact package.
